Tom has just graduated from college and moved to a new city. Today, he is going to a local bank to ask about opening a bank account there. B: Bank teller T: Tom | B: | Welcome to Standard Bank. How may I assist you? | | T: | I have some questions about opening a bank account here. | | B: | I'd be happy to help. | | T: | Great. First, what do I need to open an account? | | B: | You'll need to bring a valid form of photo ID and an initial minimum deposit of twenty-five dollars. We'll also need your home address and telephone number. | | T: | Sounds good. Now, I wasn't sure if I should open a savings or checking account. What are the advantages of each? | | B: | A savings account has a higher interest rate, but you can't use it to write checks. With a checking account, you can write checks, but the interest rate is lower. | | T: | How about ATM access? | | B: | You'll get an ATM card with any account you open with us. You can use this at our bank or at any ATM in the world that uses the same interbank network. | | T: | Am I charged a fee when I use my ATM card? | | B: | Not if you use a Standard Bank ATM. However, if you use other ATMs, you'll be charged a service fee for each transaction. | | T: | That's good to know. What about deposits? How do I make those? | | B: | You can deposit cash at any Standard Bank, or you can arrange for transfers of funds from other banks. | | T: | Thanks! You've been very helpful. I'd like to open a checking account, please. |
