Some people tell stories with words. Others tell stories with pictures. But did you know that you can tell stories with shadows? Shadow play is a unique kind of storytelling. It began in China thousands of years ago. The storyteller sits behind a white paper screen and behind the screen is a light. When the storyteller holds up a puppet—a paper person or animal—its shadow appears on the screen. A good storyteller can make these shadows run, jump, fly, or even fight! Shadow play is always very exciting to watch! Shadow play is different from country to country. In China, shadow plays are often about kings, queens, and heroes. In Greece, however, they are often about common people and are very, very funny. Sadly, there aren't many shadow-play masters left today. So you should try to see a show before this kind of storytelling is gone forever. |
